Make Pillow Cases for Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital

Yesterday many of you came out to the library to make pillow cases for kids in Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital. These kids often stay there for months and being able to personalize a bit of their room might make it feel more comfortable.

If you are interested in making a pillow case for these kids, follow the instructions below and bring them to the desk in the Children’s Room by the end of July. We will take them to the hospital for you.

Supplies

  • Fabric 44″ x 29″  (or 22″ x 29″ when folded in half length-wise)
  • needle
  • thread
  • scissors

Threading the Needle

Look for the eye of the needle (the hole). Then put the thread through this hole, making sure that there are two sides to the thread. Pull the thread until the two sides are hanging either side of the eye of the needle, matching up in length. Tie a knot with the two ends.

Sewing a Backstitch

Poke the needle down into the fabric, over about a quarter inch and back up again. Pull the thread taut so that the knot lies against the fabric.

  1. Poke the needle down by knot then over and up a quarter inch to the left of the previous needle up position.
  2. Pull thread taut so that thread lies smooth against the fabric.
  3. Put needle down into the fabric at the left hand end of your previous thread loop.
  4. Slide the needle over to the left, underneath the fabric, through the fabric approximately a quarter inch to the left of your last “up” position. Pull the thread taut to get the thread to lay smooth against the fabric.

Note: When you are at the end of a thread, anchor the stitch by weaving the end back through the previous stitches and cut off the extra. Then thread another needle and do it again, starting where you left off.

Making the Pillow Case

  1. Fold the fabric in half. Fold it length-wise with the finished sides, or “right” sides, of the fabric together. The unfinished sides, or “wrong” sides, should be facing out.
  2. Stitch the long side and one short side. Use a double threaded needle to make a straight backstitch up the long side of the fabric. Turn the fabric and continue backstitching one of the short sides. When you’re finished, turn the fabric right side out.
  3. Hem the open side. Start by folding the fabric back to create a 1/2-inch hem. Iron the fabric to create a crease. Fold the fabric back again, this time creating a 3-inch hem. Iron the fabric again and use a needle and thread to stitch around the base of the hem to keep it in place.

At the end of the 6 weeks, those who volunteered will not only receive signed volunteer service hour letters but also a reward party with pizza and a movie.
