Cat Toys for P.A.W.S.

On January 16th, HCPL teens made three kinds of cat toys and even brought in some items to donate to Partners for Animal Welfare Society (P.A.W.S.).

The following Thursday (January 18th), I delivered the toys and items to P.A.W.S. It seemed like the cats are really going to enjoy these toys. They were batting them around and one cat even decided to claim one as his own, refusing to share.

If you are interested in donating to P.A.W.S., click here for ideas of what would be most useful for them.

Cat Toy Instructions

If you would like to make your own cat toys, below are the directions for the ones made during the program.

Note: Instructions and pictures for cat toy instructions are from BabySavers, Friskies DIY Toys, and Craft Forest.

Top 10 Hidden Gems of the YA Nonfiction Section

In our YA nonfiction section, the normal types of books reside there. SAT prep workbooks, American history books, informational books with a bunch of statistics, sports, poems, ect. However, our YA section has some really unexpected books as well.

1. 100 Cats Who Changed Civilization

Until you have at least flipped through this book, you will have no idea how many important felines have existed in history. From the cat who helped Isaac Newton invent the cat door to the cat who became the first feline internet phenomenon, it covers it all. Amaze your friends with your weird cat knowledge.

2. Historical Heartthrobs

Sure, when asked who your celebrity crush is you can be normal and say Zayn Malik or Selena Gomez, but so many others have these fleeting celebrities as crushes. Find a new crush that has withstood the test of time in this book.

3. Fad Mania

From the Charleston to Silly Bandz, America has gone through some insane crazes. Learn about them all in this fun book. Impress others with your immense knowledge of popular culture through the ages.

4. Danger!

Ever think of how dangerous the world is? If you haven’t this book will tell you. 187 pages of danger await you between the covers. Try not to become agoraphobic.

5. Vargic’s Miscellany of Curious Maps

I bet you could guess what stereotype is most associated with Indiana but do you know the stereotypes associated with India or Canada? Ever guess what a map of video games would look like or the internet? Ever wonder how America was in compared to other countries when it comes to things like Miss World Winners, Speed limits, or Lightning fatalities? This book has it all. See your world in a different way.

6. Bad Girls

We have all heard the saying “Well behaved women rarely make history.” This book is full of women who are the basis of that phrase. Through cheeky writing and colorful illustrations, learn about some of the most infamous (and interesting) women in history.

7. The Elements

View the Table of Elements in a new way through beautiful photographs. Not only is this filled with information that will aid in a report that would make your science teacher swoon but it is also filled with amazing photographs of the elements. You have never thought the elements that make up the universe were this beautiful until after this book.

8. Oval Office Oddities

I am sure all those books outlining the life and career of our presidents are very interesting but I bet they don’t fill you in on these interesting tidbits of some of the most influential men in history. This book promises to give you peculiarities, firsts, and pets. It even lets you in on the first ladies and the president’s pets.

9. Last of the Giants

Lions, Tigers, and Bears! Learn about 13 huge creatures of the ancient world and how they became extinct. You will never look at modern day lions, tigers, or bears again after reading about their ginormous ancestors.

10. How They Croaked

For the morbidly curious, this book is the best treat. It tells you how some of the most famous people in history met their ultimate demise.
