Teen Hour of Code

Today HCPL had its own Hour of Code. We got on Code.org and played games that taught us how to code video games, web pages, and apps. If you are interested in learning to code, below are some free resources that will help you get started!

Online

Lynda

This is free through the library. If you go to HCPL’s website and click the link, you can log in for free using your library card. Then you can find awesome tutorials on how to code (amongst other things).

Code.org

This is the site that we used during our Hour of Code program. This is for many grade levels and teaches coding through games with popular themes, like Moana, Star Wars, and Minecraft. No downloads needed.

Alice

This is a free download that provides space for you to create your game using blocking code. The site has resources that will help you learn to use this space and, thus, learn coding.

Code Academy

This code academy gives you options of different coding languages to learn. Then it takes you through guided, interactive lessons.

Free Code Camp

While this one requires a lot of set up before you get to the meat of the program (two different free accounts, lots of introductory material, ect.), the actual program is great. It takes you step by step from the beginning and has you coding right away. Also, the projects you do are used to help charities!

Scratch

This is a great, free site that allows you to practice basic coding. Plus, no download needed!

Code School: Try Python

This teaches you Python through short videos and challenges. You do have to set up a free account though.

Bonus: Erase all Kittens is a story line game that teaches you to code as you go on a quest to find the missing kittens. It is quirky and funny. HOWEVER, only the short demo is free. The full game must be purchased.
