Be a Record Breaker - Again! Last year we broke a record of One Million Checkouts.
This year, we're going for a World Record - "Most people balancing books on their heads at the same time."

 Before the Event

  • Each person must find a book to bring to the event that is the correct size.
  • Register individually online or as a group by calling
    (317) 462-5141, Ext. 238.
  • Practice, practice, practice!

Get a Book

Book no larger than 12.2" x 9" and no smaller than 9" x 5.9"
  • Find a new or gently-used book you'd like to donate to a local literacy program
  • Or check out a library book
  • Or bring a book from home.
The library children's desks have outlines of the correct sizes. You can place your book on them to check. If you forget to bring a book, don't worry - we'll have extras at the event.

 On the Day: May 30

  1. Come to the Greenfield-Central High School football field and look for balloons at the entrances.
  2. Check in and get a number.
A steward will be assigned to assist you and answer questions during the event. We'll count to 1,000 on the loudspeaker as the field fills up.

 During the Attempt

  • Balance one book on your head. The book must be no larger than 12.2" x 9" and no smaller than 9" x 5.9".
  • At the signal, everyone will walk 5½ yards at the same time.
  • To succeed, you must finish the course and not use your hands to balance the book.
  • If the book falls, stop and put it back on your head. Remove your hands from the book before moving forward.

Cheer Us OnWe Need Your Clapping Hands

A world record deserves applause. Children too young to participate and their caregivers, please join our cheer section in the football field stands. It's an ideal spot to watch the book-balancing action on the field and clap wildly as 1,000+ family members, friends, and neighbors in Hancock County set a world record!

  • Registration is not required to participate in the cheer block.
  • On the day of the event (Saturday, May 30), look for balloons at the entrance of the football field.
  • Check in at a separate line for the cheering section.
  • Cheer us on from the bleachers as we break a world record!
  • Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
