POSITION DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Technical Services Manager 
HOURS: Full Time 40 hrs/wk, Exempt
REPORTS TO: Director

General Summary:
Manages the services and activities of the Technical Services Department including acquisitions, cataloging, materials processing, interlibrary loan, and maintenance of the library’s integrated library system.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for providing timely and accurate bibliographic access to library materials by performing original and copy cataloging.
  • Participate in interviewing job applicants for the Technical Services Department and selection of new employees.
  • Train, instruct, and assign duties to members of the department.
  • Monitor and evaluate performance of Technical Services staff.
  • Create, maintain and update policies and procedures for the department.
  • Develop goals and objectives for the department.
  • Recommend yearly departmental budget requirements and monitor the yearly budget for the department.
  • Provide various statistics and reports for the library director and other staff members on a regular basis.
  • Maintain a current awareness of library trends and new developments especially as it pertains to Technical Services, technology, cataloging and classification.
  • Attend professional meetings, participate on committees, and work collaboratively with other members of the library staff.

Education, Experience and Certification:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited school.
  • Minimum experience of 3 years in Technical Services with a focus on cataloging, classification, and acquisitions.
  • Must possess or be able to acquire State of Indiana Library Certification Level 2.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of: Microsoft Office Suite; modern internet browsers as well as basic knowledge of email; Integrated Library System Software (ILS), preferably SIRSI Symphony and Enterprise and various vendor software related to technical services.

Other Skills:

Knowledge of cataloging standards, rules and guidelines including Resource Description and Access (RDA), Library of Congress Subject Headings, FAST subject headings, Dewey Decimal Classification, MARC bibliographic records, and OCLC’s cataloging services.

  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • The employee is frequently required to sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • The employee will frequently move book carts up to 150 pounds.

Work Environment:

The work environment is a general office/library environment.

Accountability:

Overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the Technical Services department.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervises the Technical Services Department staff including participating in interviewing, hiring, evaluating and disciplining employee(s) if needed.
