Libraries Rock! Teen Summer Reading Club 2018

Summer is coming. That means that it is time to get excited about Teen Summer Reading Club. If haven’t seen me or Shelby at your school yet or you lost our handy-dandy Teen Summer Reading Club handout, I will give you the low down.

How It Works

Teen Summer Reading Club starts on June 1st and ends on August 1st. During this time, every book you log earns you a prize ticket. You can then choose one of ten prize boxes to put your ticket into. At the end of the summer, we draw a winner from each prize box.

The cool thing is you don’t have to just stick to novels. You can log graphic novels, audio books, magazines, and ebooks. Regardless, the more you read, the better your chances are to win one of the awesome prizes mentioned below. Plus when you log 5 books, you automatically get to choose a prize book to keep and a Sky Zone Fishers bookmark that serves as a thirty minute free jump pass.

Programs

Also during Summer Reading Club, the library is hopping with activities and programs for you. So come down some afternoon and join us to watch Into the Woods, or make guitar picks, or play Rock Band on the big screen. We will also be hosting our Lock-in this summer, where you can stay in the library after hours to watch a movie, eat some pizza, and hang out. To wrap up this crazy summer of fun, we will also be throwing a Color Party in July. We will be playing dodge-ball and color war using colored powder. It should be a messy fun time.

As if you needed more of a reason to come, you can win stuff for attending programs. At the end of each program, all participants will be given a Teen Summer Reading Club Scratch-off. You could win some candy, an extra prize slip, or an extra prize book.

Volunteering

Do you need volunteer hours or would like to help younger kids maintain their reading skills over the summer? If you thought “Ummm…Yeah,” you should sign up to be a Teen Volunteer for Teens Read the Way.

Every Thursday for 6 weeks, you can volunteer to be paired up with a Reading Buddy (age 3 to grade 5). For half of the time, you will sit with them and read books in the Children’s Room. (Pssstttt…. once you read 10 children’s books you can log that as one teen book! Just enter the title as “10 children’s books“) The second half you will be having fun with these kiddos doing activities like decorating guitars, going on a scavenger hunt, and making spin drums.

To thank you for your hard work throughout the summer, we throw a pizza party just for our Teen Volunteers. We watch a movie and hand out your Volunteer Letter that is your proof of the service you did this summer.

Prizes

Every book you read and log is another chance at one of these 10 prizes.

The Volunteer Opportunities

Building a Better World can also mean helping others, which is why we are having some programs where you can earn service hours.

Teens Read the Way: You can help children (age 3 to grade 5) keep their reading skills over the summer by reading with them and doing activities each week. At the end of the 6 weeks, those who volunteered will not only receive signed volunteer service hour letters but also a reward party with pizza and a movie.

Make Hospital Pillow Cases for Kids: Make fun pillow cases for kids in Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St. Vincent. Not only will it be fun and bring some joy to a kid, but it will also earn you service time and you get to learn some basic sewing.

So come join us over the summer for fun programs, reading, and prizes!

Teens Read the Way Volunteer Parties!

Congrats and THANK YOU to all our teen volunteers for this year’s Teens Read the Way program. Over the past 6 weeks, you’ve bonded with and become a treasured reading mentor for children across Hancock County.

To celebrate a job well done we’re throwing pizza & movie parties at both Greenfield and Sugar Creek locations. Sugar Creek volunteers, your party is today (7/15), Greenfield is tomorrow (Wednesday, 7/16) starting with the s’more party @ 3pm. Help your reading buddies make s’mores and pick out a book for them to take home! Immediately following the s’more party will be our volunteer party with FREE pizza and the movies chosen by you!

Sarah, re-reading Divergent by Veronica Roth in celebration of the Divergent Lock-in on Friday!

Coming to the Divergent Lock-in?

We’re going to have an awesome time at the Divergent Lock-In THIS Friday!! We’re planning out our Faction Maze Test, fun Faction activities, notifying local pizza places that we’ll be ordering A TON of pizza – You know awesome stuff like that.

The only thing that won’t be awesome is if you forget your permission slip and end up FACTIONLESS  (i.e. you are locked out of the lock-in and have to go home)

So please remember your permission slip so you can join one of these lovely factions!

“One choice can transform you.” (Still talking permission slips! HA),

B2TF - 1

It was enough to blast us back to 1955.

B2TF - 2

B2TF - 4

We’ll be showing part 2 of Movie on the Lawn on August 2 at the Sugar Creek Branch @ 8:30pm.

The world premiere of The Page Turners, a mini-movie that has been student directed, acted, and edited will be our 1st film feature. “The Page Turners” is a hilarious look at what happens when readers get sucked into a good book—literally. Our 2nd movie feature will be the movie Holes. This is a FREE event!

Hope to see you all there!
