And this is what a little hot glue, watercolor, and pinches of salt make:

Today’s Craft: DIY Shrinky-Dinks!

shrinky

Who knew making jewelry charms was so easy? Our group today made some really amazing pieces to hang from necklaces and bracelets. If you missed our session today – No worries. You can make this craft at home.

All you need is:

* 1- code #6 plastic salad container (You can find these at any grocery salad bar *NOTE: Make sure the recycle code IS #6. This is the only plastic that will work.)

* Permanent markers

* Scissors

* Hole punch

* Aluminum foil (this will be your oven tray)

* Oven – preheated to 350°

* Embroidery floss, chain, or string to attach your charms to after

Begin by drawing your desired image with permanent marker on the #6 plastic. Cut around your drawing and punch a hole to thread string if you plan to wear it as a charm. Make a tray out of aluminum foil to place in the 350° preheated oven. Place your plastic on the aluminum foil and place on lowest rack of the oven. The shrink time for our projects only took about 45 seconds. The plastic will curl and bubble up before it lays flat. (We experimented with both and found taking the plastic out between curling and flattening made a blown-glass effect.) Carefully take out of the oven and let your drawing cool for about 1 minute. Then start creating your bracelet or necklace!

NOTE: Your drawings will shrink to about 1/3 of the size you draw, so start with an object that is about 2 inches big.
