Teen Winter Reading Club 2018

In case you have not heard this month is Winter Reading. During this month, you register online and then log the books (or magazines, ebooks, audiobooks, and graphic novels) that you read during this month. For every book logged, you get a slip to put into one of four prize boxes. On March 1st, one name will be drawn from each prize box to win.

2018 Teen Winter Reading Prizes:

Weekly Prizes

This year we have even more chances to win something! All teens registered in Teen Winter Reading Club is automatically entered to win a small weekly prize.

2018 Battle of the Books

Every year, Hancock County Public Library’s Teen Services hosts Battle of the Books. Schools from around the county are invited to form a team of 8th and 9th graders to participate in a trivia-style competition that covers 10 books that are chosen by the Teen Services Librarian.

If your team wins Battle, bragging rights will not be the only prize you take home. The winning team gets to take the traveling Battle of the Books trophy to keep until next year. Also, each team member’s name will be etched on a plate that will be added to the Teen Room Battle of the Books plaque. In addition, each member of the winning team will also get to take home a gift card and a prize book.

This year’s competition will be held on Wednesday, April 18th, 2018. If you are currently in 8th or 9th grade and are interested in participating, either contact the Teen Services Librarian through the Teen Services contact form or talk to your school’s Battle of the Book coach.

National Novel Writing Month

In case you didn’t know, today is the start of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). It is during this time when people challenge themselves to write a 50,000 word novel.

Some of your favorite YA authors have participated in NaNoWriMo and have written the first draft of what would become some of your favorite books.

How do I participate in NanoWriMo?

If you are a writer, or just like a challenge, you should try to write your own NaNoWriMo novel. You can do it by yourself or you can become a part of the NaNoWriMo community. All you have to do is sign-up for free using an email address at nanowrimo.org.

Not only can you track your word counts and get support from other NaNoWriMo participants, but you can also find great resources to help you through this challenge.

The Library is rooting for you

We are excited to help you with this amazing feat. Every Wednesday of November from 4pm to 5pm we will be opening the computer lab for anyone who is participating in NaNoWriMo.

Also, don’t forget that the library is full of awesome resources  to help get you started or get you through the rough patches.

Good luck!
